Managing 2025 HVAC Refrigerant Cost Increases

January 1, 2025, marks a major milestone in the HVAC industry. The widely used refrigerant R410A has officially been phased out, following the earlier phase-out of R22 refrigerant. As a result, HVAC systems across the country must now transition to low GWP refrigerants such as R454B and R32, which are becoming the new industry standards.

Global Warming Potential (GWP) is now a critical factor in refrigerant selection. GWP measures how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere over time. To meet EPA regulations and address environmental concerns, refrigerants with lower GWP values are replacing older, high-GWP options.

As the HVAC industry transitions refrigerants, both commercial HVAC providers and building owners are seeing sharp increases in refrigerant prices and product shortages. These challenges are impacting building air conditioning systems, vehicle climate control, and commercial refrigeration units in grocery stores and restaurants.

The volatility in HVAC refrigerant cost and availability stems from several factors. According to Jessica Arney, Service Manager at EnviroControl Systems, “Due to manufacturing change-over, shortages are occurring as both R410A production ceased in 2024 and production of R32 and R454B has yet to reach its peak.”

To help manage the rising cost of refrigerant, EnviroControl Systems, a trusted HVAC service provider in Southwest Ohio, recommends the following strategies:

  • Prioritize HVAC maintenance. Routine maintenance is more critical than ever. EnviroControl Systems’ preventative maintenance programs are designed to detect issues early and keep your system running efficiently — saving you money in the long run.
  • Plan for equipment replacement. R410A units manufactured before 2025 may still be in stock. As long as these systems and refrigerants are available, it may be more cost-effective to replace failing equipment with these models before switching to more expensive R454B systems.
  • Check for refrigerant leaks. Leaking refrigerants not only harm the environment but also reduce system efficiency and increase replacement costs. Leak detection and repair services can save money and improve your system’s performance.

As a family-owned, award-winning company, EnviroControl Systems proudly serves the Southwest Ohio HVAC market, providing expert service, reliable maintenance, and sustainable HVAC solutions for today’s changing industry.
