What Causes Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels. Sources of CO gas include:

  • Faulty or poorly vented heaters in furnaces or boilers
  • Blocked chimneys or flues
  • Cracked heat exchanger
  • Fireplaces with improper ventilation

Protect Yourself and Others from CO leaks:

  • Regular professional maintenance of your heating system
  • Install professional carbon monoxide monitors; don’t trust life and health to over-the-counter, big box models.
  • Practice safe use per manufacturer instructions of a gas cooking range, portable generators, charcoal grills;
  • Never exhaust vehicle fumes into closed spaces.
