Is It the Flu or the Flue?
EnviroControl Systems warns of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning and alerts to its symptoms. Carbon monoxide (CO) is deadly but gives no warning of its presence. It’s colorless, tasteless, and odorless. Carbon monoxide poisoning may be overlooked because its symptoms mimic the flu, yet without fever. CO poisoning causes serious illness and even death in as little as 15 minutes in extreme cases.
Symptoms of CO Poisoning:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness or fatigue
- Nausea or vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Blurred vision
- Confusion
- Memory problems and sleep disturbances
- Seizure and coma
What Causes Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels. Sources of CO gas include:
- Faulty or poorly vented heaters in furnaces or boilers
- Blocked chimneys or flues
- Cracked heat exchanger
- Fireplaces with improper ventilation
Protection From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Protect Yourself and Others from CO leaks:
- Regular professional maintenance of your heating system
- Install professional carbon monoxide monitors; don’t trust life and health to over-the-counter, big box models.
- Practice safe use per manufacturer instructions of a gas cooking range, portable generators, charcoal grills;
- Never exhaust vehicle fumes into closed spaces.
